  • Blockhead Cobalt Blue Spoon Pipe with UV Encalmo
    American Glass Hand Pipes

Blockhead Cobalt & UV Encalmo Spoon Pipe

This Blockhead spoon pipe is cobalt blue with a blue UV section on the front of the bowl that glows in the black light! This technique used to fuse the 2 different colors of glass together is called an Encalmo. In order to make encalmo pieces, the glassblower preps encalmo sections of whatever colors they’d like to work with. This process is slow and steady, as glassblowers repeatedly stack colors on the flame and then condense down the sections. Once the tube is smooth and even, it’s ready to be worked into a piece!

“Incalmo” literally means “graft” in Venetian, and that’s the perfect word to describe this technique. In order to make an encalmo piece, glassblowers must work two separate bubbles of glass and then join them together. In order to join the separate parts, glassblowers open the end of each bubble and join them in the flame. The joining is particularly difficult because the lips of both bubbles must be identical sizes to be joined correctly. Traditional encalmo vases and receptacles feature two or three different colored sections joined together. Contemporary functional glass pieces often feature several encalmo sections, creating a one-of-a-kind spectrum of color.

  • Rockin' A Glass 4" Spoon Pipe with Cane Work & Wigwag
    American Glass Hand Pipes

Rockin’ A Glass 4″ Spoon Pipe with Cane Work & Wigwag

This beautiful glass pipe was made by Rockin’ A Glass in Gresham, TX. It is fumed with gold and has lots of different cane (or twisty cane) work for a trippy and fun feel. Because the pipe is fumed with gold, the coloring will gradually change the more it gets used.

The colorful “wigwag” pattern on the front of the pipe adds vibrant playful vibes. In laymen’s terms, the wigwag pattern is made by melting long and skinny different colored glass rods together to make colorful and contrasting line tubing. And then the glass blower starts turning, twisting, and pulling that line tubing back and forth in small sections to make that wavy look. It takes a bit of prep work, which is why pipes with this pattern are usually a bit more expensive.

  • Rockin' A Glass Fumed Spoon Pipe with Twisty Cane & Reversal
    American Glass Hand Pipes

Rockin’ A Glass 4″ Fumed Spoon Pipe with Twisty Cane & Millie

This beautiful glass pipe was made by Rockin’ A Glass in Gresham, TX. It is fumed with gold and has lots of different cane (or twisty cane) work for a trippy and fun feel. Because the pipe is fumed with gold, the coloring will gradually change the more it gets used. This pipe also has a millie encased in the marble to the right of the bowl.

Fun Fact: Glass millies are a form of glass art made using a technique like the one used to make hard candy slices. Glass rods are carefully placed layer upon layer to create a low-resolution image. The glass is then heated/melted and stretched into one long rod, condensing the image into a higher resolution, sharpening the image. These rods are slice into chips, known as millie chips.
